CPI Training

What is CPI?

Nonviolent Crisis Intervention provides staff with the skills to safely recognize and respond to everyday crisis situations that may involve more challenging student behaviors. The training is designed to help an organization achieve compliance with current legislative initiatives and best practices.

New participants attend an initial “full” class course.  The full course teaches participants to recognize the characteristics of a student in crisis and how to respond to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff.  While the course includes training regarding physical restraints as a last resort, the emphasis is on avoiding these by verbally de-escalating the student in crisis before a restraint may be needed.  The course also focuses on the individual participant’s ability to become self-aware of the effects of his/her behavior on a student or situation to ensure that the staff member does not become the precipitating factor and escalate an incident.

The “refresher” course is an abbreviated course that reflects the full course and is geared toward a staff member who needs to renew his/her certification before it expires or within 90 days after it has expired.
